The Silent Solution - 999 |
||
Dear Resident,
I wanted to share this information with you today, please share this with any friends, neighbour or family who you think it may help.
What is the Silent Solution? The "Silent Solution" is a system that helps people who are unable to speak (e.g., due to domestic violence or other emergencies) call 999 for police assistance. When you call 999 and remain silent, the system will prompt you to press 55 to indicate it's a genuine emergency. This allows the police to identify and respond to the call.
A recorded message will instruct callers who can't talk to press 55 to be put through to police. Staying silent and not pressing 55 will lead to the call being terminated. How does it work? If you need urgent police help but cannot speak, you should: Dial 999 Listen to the questions from the operator Respond by coughing or tapping your device, if you can If prompted, press 55 to let the operator know it's a genuine emergency and you'll be put through to police. Call from a landline If you don't speak or answer questions and the operator can only hear background noise, they'll transfer your call to the police. If you replace the handset, the landline may remain connected for 45 seconds in case you pick it up again. Calling 999 from a landline automatically gives the police information about your location.
Hearing or speech impairments If you have a hearing or speech impairment and you’ve pre-registered with the emergencySMS service, you can use our textphone service 18000 or text us on 999. If you're a British Sign Language (BSL) user, you can call 999 BSL to use a remote BSL interpreter.
Kind Regards, Police Staff Wayne Griffith Norbiton, Coombe Vale, New Malden Village Cluster Safer Neighbourhood Team | ||
